Two persons, Isaac Eribadu and Sunday Olaleke who were last week arrested by the Police in Ojodu BU/Undertaking for impersonating Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, IKEDC, staff and illegally disconnecting/extorting customers for non-payment of bills, were on Wednesday arraigned  before the Ikosi Magistrate Court.

The arraignment was part of the quest to quash the activities of impostors who extort money from members of the public under the guise of being staff of the Ikeja Distribution Company (IKEDC).

The accused pleaded not guilty to charges of impersonation and were each granted bail upon the conditions of N100,000 bail bond and Level 8 Civil Servant as sureties.

In the interim, they have been remanded to prison custody pending the perfection of their bail conditions, while the case was adjourned to 5th March 2014 for trial.

Speaking on the development, Pekun Adeyanju, Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, IKEDC said the case will serve as a deterrent to persons who have been impersonating  IKEDC staff as well as vandalizing the company’s equipment and installations.

Adeyanju said IKEDC had continued to sensitise members of the public on the activities of impostors adding that the Disco is partnering with relevant authorities to ensure that the issue of vandalism, sabotage and theft is addressed. “We will stop at nothing to ensure that defaulters are duly prosecuted,” he stressed.

He said members of the public need to know that no one including current and past PHCN or IKEDC staff is authorized to make monetary or other demands from customers in return for reconnection or allocation of pre-paid meters.

“We urge members of the public to rebuff these impostors and report such cases via email : customercare@ikedc.com to or the nearest IKEDC office and we will follow up such cases to conclusion.”

Adeyanju stated that IKEDC remained solely responsible for the supply, repair and replacement of its equipment and installations.

“We have since commenced customer education campaigns aimed at creating awareness of ongoing efforts to improve service delivery and encouraging customer involvement in ensuring the success of the Power Reforms,” he added.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, activities, the new management of Ikeja Distribution Company (IKEDC) in conjunction with UNITE  FOR SIGHT NIGERIA, a non-governmental organisation, has organised a free Eye Care programme for residents of Ikorodu and Odogunyan axis of Lagos State.

According to Olanipekun Adeyanju, AGM, Public Affairs, IKEDC, the exercise which held from January 2 – 3 2014, was part of the company’s consumer engagement activities aimed at giving back to the society whilst educating the public on its role in ensuring the nation achieves affordable, efficient and sustainable power supply in the nearest future.

Residents of Ikorodu enjoyed free access to eye screening, minor eye treatments, distribution of eye- glasses and eye drugs, cataract surgeries and eye health education-to raise public awareness on the need for regular eye checks.

Prior to the “Sight for All” exercise, IKEDC had also collaborated with  Agboyi-Ketu Ward Health Committee Alliance (WHCA) in Agboyi-Ketu local Council Development Area (LCDA) on 23rd December, 2013 to offer free medical care to residents.

The exercise included free high blood pressure checks, HIV counseling, diabetes check, drug prescription and free treatments. The forum provided a platform to educate residents on the need for regular health checks and hazards of self-medication.

The high point of both exercises was the open discussion on the state of power in the nation.

Contrary to expectations that the handover of power assets to new investors would result in immediate solutions, IKEDC explained to its customers that the transfer had only begun a process that would culminate in enhanced power supply in the nearest future.

The scheme, according to Adeyanju, apart from being an opportunity to give back to the society, was designed to provide a platform for IKEDC to interact closely with the public to create better understanding of its activities as well as the rights and the responsibilities of electricity consumers.

IKEDC appealed for the patience and understanding of electricity customers as it moves to redefine service in the sector through continuous global affiliations, investment in new technology and human capital development.

IKEDC has the Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), a globally renowned power company as technical partners. KEPCO, the largest electricity utility company in Asia in terms of transmission and distribution, has six generation subsidiaries with 84,000MW capacity, several subsidiary companies and a global efficiency record of a maximum downtime period of slightly above three minutes annually.

The company provided answers to critical questions from residents on inadequate power supply, metering, estimated billing, and vandalism of power equipment, among others. Flyers containing contacts of its principal officers and answers to Frequently Asked Questions were distributed to enhance the process of understanding IKEDC and providing a feedback platform.

Adeyanju assured that there would be more CSR initiatives and consumer education exercises in other areas of Lagos to establish a partnership with the public in the quest for a new dawn of uninterrupted power supply in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has said that it would commence the audit of Dana Airline next week to pave way for the arrival of the external auditors invited by the Authority to team up with NCAA in the audit of the airline.

A statement by Fan Ndubuoke, General Manager, Public Affairs of NCAA, said that the external auditors, who had been invited from Europe and America to join NCAA in the audit, would have arrived Nigeria by then.

“This is to make sure that the authority follows the Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs),” Ndubuoke said.

According to him, the delay in starting the audit by NCAA was to ensure a thorough exercise with the assistance of the external auditors.

Dana Air had expressed disappointment at the NCAA’s delay in starting the airline’s audit since October 6 when the agency ordered the temporary suspension of the airline’s operations.

Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the domestic terminal of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA2), Ikeja, has asked the Federal High Court Lagos to commit three top officials of the Federal Airports Authority (FAAN) to jail for contempt of court.

Bi-Courtney’s application followed the refusal of the officials, including its Managing Director, George Uriesi, to comply with the orders of Justice Jona Adah, in the suit restraining them from interfering with work on a four-star hotel and conference centre, which the plaintiff is developing at the airport.

According to the application, others against whom Bi-Courtney wants the order of contempt made include FAAN; the authority’s Chief Security Officer, Col. C.L. Onalo and its General Manager, Public Affairs, Yakubu Dati.

Bi-Courtney, according to (Form 49) dated June 26, this year, claimed that the affected individuals willfully violated the order of the court, which restrained them and their representatives from “commencing, continuing and/or completing any actions or permitting the commencement, continuance and/or completion of any actions in respect of taking over possession of and/or interfering with the Applicant’s possession of the Four Star Hotel and Conference Centre situate at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2, Ikeja, pending the hearing and determination of the Applicant’s application for interlocutory injunction….”
