Sadiq Daba, ace Nigerian actor and former broadcaster, has passed away.

It was gathered that the film star, known for his role in ‘Cock Crow at Dawn,’ an NTA drama series, died on Wednesday evening.

The ace actor breathed his last at the Lagos state university teaching hospital (LASUTH), although details of his death remain sketchy as of the time of this report.

Kunle Afolayan, an award-winning filmmaker, has taken to his social media page to pay tribute to the deceased.

Daba’s death comes after he had battled with leukemia and prostate cancer for years.

He, however, dismissed death rumours about him in 2017 shortly after he was diagnosed with the disease.

“I am not dead nor dying I!! God has been and will Always be faithful to me and my plight, because that is my covenant with Him,” he had said at the time.

“My doctors have been wonderful and I am responding to treatment. …..my love and thanks to all those who have called to sympathize and empathize with me…..God bless you.”

In 2019, Daba also made the headlines after he sought financial support from the public for his medical upkeep.

The deceased had an illustrious career in the movie and broadcasting landscape with strings of awards and recognition.

In 2015, he won the ‘Best Actor’ category at the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for his role as Inspector Waziri in ‘October 1’, a movie released in 2014.

His last major acting project was on ‘Citation’, a 2020 movie by Kunle Afolayan.

Rumours had swirled last year that his health had deteriorated and was on the verge of losing his sight.

Femi Otedola, billionaire businessman, has promised to take care of the medical expenses of ailing nollywood actor, Sadiq Daba.

In a statement on Sunday, Otedola said he was sad to hear that the veteran actor had fallen ill again.

In 2017, Daba, who had been battling leukaemia and prostate cancer for the past few years, returned to Nigeria having travelled to the UK for medical treatment.

“I heard about Mr. Sadiq Daba’s health condition when it was brought to my attention through an online news story I read two days ago.

“I was saddened to hear that he had taken ill again after overcoming his challenges from prostate cancer just two years ago.

“From the news report, I gathered that he was rushed to the Emergency unit of LUTH after being diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“I must say that even though I don’t know Mr.Daba personally, he is a face I am familiar with through the old TV drama production ‘Cock Crow at Dawn’ which I used to watch while growing up.

“I was moved by a sense of nostalgia and concern when I read of his medical situation recently and decided to take over his medical bills. He has been visited and arrangements are being made to support him.

“In other climes, the likes of Sadiq Daba and other such actors who more or less paved the way for the entertainment industry and the Nollywood industry in Nigeria (which is touted as the 3rd largest movie industry in the world) would be celebrated as Icons and due recognition would be accorded to them.

“For me, taking care of Sadiq’s medical expenses is my little way of showing appreciation and gratitude for the good memories he created for me and others in the past.”

In April, the business tycoon had offered to foot the medical bills of Christian Chukwu, former Super Eagles’ coach.

Dr Joe Obiajulu Okei-Odumakin, Chairman (Steering Committee) Movement against Corruption and President, Women Arise for Change has urged Nigerians to join the EFCC in winning the war against corruption in the country.

Odumakin who was speaking during a courtesy visit to the Economic and Finacial Crimes Commission on February 2, expressed concern over the impact of corruption in Nigeria noting that “Nigeria is bleeding under the heavy weight of corruption”.

She called on Nigerians to take the fight against corruption as a duty saying, “There is the need for Nigerians to own the fight against corruption because it is not only for Magu and EFCC, but for the citizens to win”.

Odumakin attributed the success of the EFCC to the political will of the government, noting that Nigerians too can attest this going by what happened recently in Addis Ababa where President Buhari was honoured as the ‘Africa Anti-corruption Champion’ by the African Union, AU.

“The government has helped in providing an enabling environment for the Commission to thrive”, she said.

While urging the Senate to join the wagon of change by confirming Magu as the substantive chairman of EFCC, Odumakin said “If at the level of Africa, the giant strides of Magu and indeed Nigeria in the fight against corruption is recognized, and if we can realise that if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill us, then I am appealing to the Senate as true representatives of the people, not to stand against the moving train”

The Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, on his part, called on Nigerians to eschew all manners corruption as it remains the bane of the country.

Magu urged the group to take upon itself the zeal to fight corruption stressing that, “It is a duty that must be done”.

In charging Nigerians to take ownership of the fight against corruption, Magu challenged individuals as stakeholders in the fight not to shy away from fighting the hydra-headed monster.

“Fight corruption the way you can. The fight against corruption should not be left for the EFCC alone. Everybody has a duty to fight corruption. You may not fight corruption the way EFCC is doing, but you can do it through your actions or deeds”, he said.

The EFCC boss assured the group that, despite the odds, he would not give up in the fight against corruption adding that he would fight the menace this year like never before.

“Against all adversaries, I remain focused, dogged, committed and determined more than never before to bring all corrupt elements in this country to justice. So, let’s join hands to fight the battle and ensure it is won”, he said.

He urged the group to continue its efforts in mobilizing Nigerians against corruption for the country to attain sustainable development.

Oke-Odumakin was accompanied on the visit by Sadiq Daba, veteran actor and ambassador of the Movement Against Corruption.

Daba lauded the numerous achievements of the EFCC and urged Magu to continue with his job without fear or favour saying, “Nigerians are behind you”
