Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, the NNPP National leader, has advised the 1,800 couples under the mass wedding scheme against checking their spouses’ phones.

This is to avoid anything that could lead to the marriage break up, he counselled.

Kwankwaso spoke at the reception organised for the couples by the State Government at the Open Theatre in Kano Government House on Saturday.

He said checking spouses’ phones by married couples is one of the major causes of marriage breakups, hence the need for couple to shun anything that could lead to crisis.

“You have been advised by all and sundry. I believe you have been advised a thousand times. Ulamas, parents, relatives and even business people have advised you on how to live peacefully with one another.

“But, I have one single advice for you; that is checking spouses’ phones. Don’t peep your spouses’ phones as that is the major cause of marriage breakup these days,” he said.

Kwankwaso lauded the political commitment demonstrated by Gov. Abba Yusuf for making the exercise a reality.

He also commended the administration for committing over N700 million to sponsor over 600 students to various universities outside the country.

“We have made the right choice by electing Governor Abba Yusuf as our governor. He is a good leader who had continued with our legacies. One of such of legacies is this mass wedding.

“Apart from this, he is delivering mass oriented projects. We call on the good people of Kano state to support his administration,” he said.

Earlier, Yusuf said the beneficiaries of the mass wedding were selected from across the 44 local government areas and the 484 wards of the state.

According to him, not less than 30 couples were selected from each of the 44 local government areas of the state.

He explained that the state government took full responsibility of the marriage, including payment of dowry, provision of furniture, wedding food stuff and N20,000 grant for the brides to start up small scale businesses at the comfort of their matrimonial houses.

He therefore urged the couples to live peacefully in accordance with the teaching of Islam.

Welcoming guests earlier, the Commander General, Kano Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, said no fewer than 1,500 couples tied the knot on Friday.

However, Daurawa disclosed that out of the 1,800 couples, the wedding of 264 had been suspended as they tested positive with some ailments and were  undergoing medical treatment.

He said after taking the medication, a new date would be announced for the wedding of the remaining 264 couples.

The Islamic cleric pointed out that the wedding scheme had followed due and transparent process, commending the state government for the kind gesture.

While praying for the couples to have long lasting marital bliss, Daurawa admonished them to fear God in dealing with one another.

Tanko Yakasai, elder statesman and a founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has alleged that Muhammadu Sanusi II, dethroned emir of Kano, pledged allegiance to Rabiu Kwankwaso, instead of Abdullahi Ganduje, incumbent governor.

Kwankwaso, the immediate past governor of Kano, had appointed Sanusi as an emir in 2014. Ganduje was deputy governor of the state at the time.

In an interview with PUNCH, Yakasai said Sanusi’s trouble began when Ganduje and Kwakwanso fell apart.

“But unfortunately for him, in-between the time he was appointed and subsequent events, when the two people who appointed him parted ways on party basis, the deputy now became the governor and I think in my opinion, I don’t think the emir sees the deputy as the man, who appointed him,” he said.

“That is what I see as the beginning of the crisis. Later on, the emir has been speaking his mind, which I respected but some of what he says were not in consonance with the established tradition in the society. He has not been part and parcel of that society he originated from. So, this is the problem.”

Yakasai said Sanusi was not brought up in Kano and that might have contributed to the problems he had while on the throne.

“I was born here in Kano and I know the tradition in the palace. Since when I was young till today, (the tradition) is that both educated and uneducated emirs tend not to speak too much,” he said.

“They treasure their words. The emir (Sanusi) was born in Kano, but he was largely brought up in Lagos and Kaduna. His father was a federal civil servant who rose to the position of a Permanent Secretary.

“As it is natural with civil servants, particularly at the federal level in foreign affairs, they don’t stay in one place. The result is that the emir was initially living with the late minister of defence, Alhaji Inuwa Wada, but later when the father was back, they changed him. The emir is only a Kano man; he did not live alongside Kano people until he mounted the throne. That was the beginning.”

As emir, Sanusi had criticised government policies in the open, but Yakasai said that people who go to those in authority to offer their advice privately tend to achieve more success.

“They tend to meet the listening ears of those in authority. But for people who go to the media or the public place to air their views, those in authority would think they are playing to the gallery and are not being honest about their views.”

Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano state, says Rabiu Kwankwaso, his predecessor, has been forced to retire from politics.

Ganduje said this when he received Abdul’aziz Garba-Gafasa, speaker of the state assembly, alongside some members of the ruling party who accompanied four newly elected state legislators during a visit to the governor.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won six out of the seven legislative seats (federal and state assembly) during the recent rerun elections.

Ganduje said the APC victory in the elections is a clear indication that Kwankwaso has been retired from politics.

Ganduje served as Kwankwaso’s deputy for eight years but both men fell apart shortly before he succeeded the former governor.

“Some years back when he (Kwankwaso) was warming up to contest for the presidential seat, he boasted that he would retire President Muhammadu Buhari from politics saying also that he would retire me from politics. But if you look at it now, who then is forced to retire?” Ganduje asked.

“The member of the state assembly is from Madobi, member House of Representatives from there, Chairman of the local government, councillors, senator where Madobi falls, the state governor and president are all APC. So, we have retired him from politics.

“Some political remarks and behaviours of Kwankwaso, particularly during election period are not in order. Our style of politics is calculative and decent. I can therefore not follow his style, that is always castigating without any decorum. We respect people and we see respect and dignity in people. Ours is not like theirs.”

On why the APC lost Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency, Ganduje said: “We couldn’t get that seat as a result of the crisis that rocked the party at the constituency. The APC candidate was in conflict with the leadership of the party in the state, in the local government, with the local government administration and even with the electorate. That caused us to lose the seat as a party.”

Abdulmumin Jibrin, an ally of Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, was the APC candidate in the constituency.

The National Executive Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dissociated itself from the the governorship primary election conducted in Kano on Monday.

Shehu Yusuf Kura, the Special Adviser Media to National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), made the remark in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Wednesday.

According to Kura, the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) is not aware of the election as it has issued a statement postponing the governorship primary election in Kano, Imo and Lagos states.

“The National Executive Council of the Party was not aware that the Kwankwaso group was conducting the election in Kano because of the earlier statement issued postponing the election in the three states mentioned.

“I even spoke with our National Chairman, Secretary and other executive members of the council and they confirmed to me that they were not aware of the election,” he said.

He said the National Headquarters of the party would not accept or consider the result of the governorship primary election held in Kano on Monday as it was illegally conducted.

Kura said the party would announce a new date for the conduct of its governorship primary election in the three states.

NAN reports that the State chapter of the PDP had on Tuesday rejected the governorship primary election conducted on Monday night at the Lugard Avenue, personal residence of Kwankwaso in Kano.

The poll returned Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso’s son in-law, Abba Kabiru Yusuf, as the party’s Governorship candidate for the State.

Gwarzo, who announced the decision while speaking with newsmen in Kano on Tuesday, said the decision to withdraw from the contest followed the meeting held between him and the party stakeholders for the promotion of democracy in the state and the district in particular.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have to pick its presidential flag bearer in next year’s election from the Northwest geo political zone, sources have said.

With over 18 million eligible voters as at last February, the zone has the largest voting population in the country, followed by the Southwest with over 14million voters.

The main opposition party is taking notice of the situation and may settle for one of its presidential aspirants from the zone at its convention next month to slug it out with the incumbent, President Muhammadu Buhari in the February 2019 poll.

Buhari is on course to emerge as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate later this month.

Presidential aspirants of the PDP from the Northwest are Senator Ahmed Maikarfi, Alhaji Sule Lamido, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Special Duties Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, former Kano State governor Ibrahim Shekarau, former Sokoto State governor Attahiru Bafarawa and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The implication is that the likes of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from Adamawa in the Northeast and Senate president Bukola Saraki from Kwara State in the Northcentral stand a little or no chance of getting the PDP ticket.

Party source said on Saturday that Saraki in particular may be facing formidable hurdles already from the PDP and the Northwest geo political in his bid to fly the party’s flag in next year’s presidential election.

Saraki formally declared his presidential aspiration in Abuja on Thursday, citing pressure from Nigerian youths.

However, party source said that the former Kwara State governor has a long chain of barriers to be broken to achieve his ambition.

One of such is the suggestion by some PDP members that the party’s presidential candidate has to come from the Northwest zone for the PDP to stand a good chance of defeating President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari is from Daura, Katsina State in the Northwest and commands a cult followership not only in the zone but across the northern region.

Pressure is mounting on the PDP leadership to narrow down its ticket to the Northwest as it is the only way to compete with Buhari.

Kwankwaso from Kano State in the Northwest is one of the leading advocates for the PDP presidential candidate coming from the Northwest and his view is shared by many in the party.

Their argument is that the only way to whittle down the votes of the APC and its candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, in the zone is for the PDP to pick a candidate from the same zone.

Several interest groups from the zone are now promoting the view point in the party.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Friday shortly after obtaining his nomination documents, Kwankwaso said: “everyone knows that the bulk of the votes come from the Northwest and it would not be wrong for anyone to suggest that the PDP candidate should come from that zone.

“You all saw from the last general election in 2015 the number of votes from Kano alone. So it’s just normal to expect the candidate to emerge from the Northwest. That is the only way to defeat them (APC). But this is my opinion because everybody has their different opinions”.

Another formidable obstacle to Saraki’s aspiration is the perceived disposition of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike who is seen by many as the de facto leader of the PDP.

Wike, chief backer of the incumbent national chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, is said to be the number one supporter of Tambuwal’s presidential ambition.

It is understood that there is an agreement between him and Tambuwal that he will be the Sokoto State governor’s running mate in the presidential race if he gets the ticket.

Wike’s disposition on the PDP presidential ticket is suspected to have informed Secondus’ hurried exit from the venue of Saraki’s formal declaration for the presidency in Abuja on Thursday.

Secondus had led other members of the national executive committee of the PDP to the event, at the invitation of the organisers unaware that Saraki had a different agenda.

It was gathered that neither Secondus nor the organisers of the event had the slightest inkling that Saraki was going to take advantage of the forum to declare his aspiration.

Apparently rattled by Saraki’s ambush, the organisers were forced to issue a disclaimer the following day, expressing their disappointment and embarrassment at the action of the Senate President.

The Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje ‎ says the defection of Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso and other lawmakers to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would not affect the chances of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.‎

This is contained in a statement signed by Abba Anwar, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor and made available to newsmen on Friday in Kano.

‎”Their defection will not constitute any problem to our great party, the APC, at all levels. People should keep their eyes (open) to what will happen during election.

“Our dear President has been doing the needful in terms of developing the nation, coupled with his efforts in efficient service delivery. Good governance is at its peak and the war against corruption is successfully being waged.

“I want you to go and study the situation on ground in Kano, his (Kwankwaso ‘s) defection does not change the political mood in the state. Nobody cares to be disturbed by their action,” Ganduje said.

The governor said when his predecessor was in the APC his intention was to vie for Presidency adding, “when it appeared to him, in black and white, that there is no vacancy in the Villa, he now decided to leave on his own.”

He said that Kwankwaso should be ready to battle it out at the polls next year.

Ganduje said when Kwankwaso secures a presidential ticket from the party he cross carpets to, then he should wait and see how we will slug it out with him.

He said that when the time comes, the senator would fully understand how popular and loveable President Muhammadu Buhari is.

“Kano will give more votes to our President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 , than what he got in 2015 election.

“From the 2015 election to date, those who could not vote because of age limit, are now grown up, meaning they will now be eligible to vote.

“Therefore, President Buhari stands the chance to get five million votes from Kano State by grace of Almighty Allah,” he said.

Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso,(APC- Kano Central) on Tuesday said there would be no reprisal attacks against the Yoruba living in the North following the crisis in Ile-Ife on March 8.

Kwankwaso said this in Sabo area of Ile-Ife after meeting with members of the Hausa community inside a mosque.

The former Kano State governor, who was in company with Gov. Rauf Aregbesola and Sen. Babajide Omoworare (APC-Osun East), told journalists that he was in Osun to promote peace and the rule of law.

According to him, the Kwankwasiya Foundation will offer the victims of the crisis succour as from next week.

He urged members of the Hausa community to resist the temptation to take laws into their hands and further breach the peace gradually returning to the affected area.

Also speaking, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola stressed the significance of peaceful co-existence in spite of the activities of the hoodlums which led to the incident.

He said security agencies had arrested some suspects in connection with the crisis, adding that the perpetrators would face the full wrath of the law.

Aregbesola further said that the state government would help set up a Peace and Reconciliation Committee with a view to finding a permanent solution to the crisis.

Receiving Kwankwaso on behalf of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Obalufe of Ife kingdom, Idowu Adediwura, recalled that Hausa had been living in Ife since 1894 without any fear of molestation.

He attributed the incident to the activities of miscreants, saying Ife had been generally peaceful .

The traditional ruler commended the efforts made by Kwankwanso toward resolving the crisis while appealing to security agents to handle the issue with fairness and objectivity.

“We are creatures of Almighty God, hence we are all citizens of the world and we abhor bloodletting in all its ramifications,” he stated.

The National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA) and its state’s counterpart had distributed some relief materials to the victims of the communal clash.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) , Chief John Oyegun, on Saturday urged the people of Kogi to vote out Gov, Idris Wada, in order to liberate themselves from poverty and underdevelopment.

Oyegun, who addressed a rally in Lokoja to drum support for the APC governorship candidate, Abubakar Audu, said the election was an opportunity for the people to end years of bad governance in the state.

The APC national chairman, who was accompanied to the rally by national officers of the party, three governors and two deputy governors, called on the people to embrace change and “dump the bad past.”

“The state is still stuck in the failed promises of transformation,” Oyegun said and stressed that it was time for Kogi people to vote wisely in order to protect the future of their children.

Oyegun said the APC is targeting 80 percent of the votes during the governorship election, pledging that it would bring about total change in the lives of the people.

In his remarks, Audu promised to work for the progress and development of the state, saying that he was on a rescue mission to save the state from total collapse.

The governorship candidate promised to adhere to the principle of rotation by being the first governor to give effect to the arrangement.

Audu, who was flanked by his deputy, James Faleke promised to settle all outstanding workers salaries and allowances, and ensure justice and equity in the distribution of projects.

Governors Rochas Okorocha, Tanko Al- Makura, Samuel Ortom and Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso also addressed the rally.
