The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, as the winner of the state governorship election held on Saturday.

The state Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, who is also the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, announced the results on Sunday morning at INEC’s state collation centre in Owerri, the state capital.

He declared Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the election with 540,308, votes while Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party came a distant second with a total of 71,503 votes.

Athan Achonu of the Labour Party polled 64,081 votes to come third in the election.

Anthony Ejiogu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance garnered 6,392 votes to come fourth and Jack Ogunewe of the Action Alliance came fifth with 5,756 votes.

The state’s Returning Officer said, “I, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, I was the Returning officer for the Imo state governorship election held on November 11, 2023. That the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Good Hope Uzodimma, having scored the highest number of votes and satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner of the election and returned elected.”

The results announced by INEC showed that Uzodimma swept all the 27 Local Government Areas of the state.

With this result, Uzodimma will be sworn – in for a second term in office on January 14, 2024.

Earlier, the State Agent of the LP, Callistus Ihejiagwa, was beaten and bundled out of the state Collation centre after he protested the results announced by the Local Government Areas Retuning officers.

He said that the results were manipulated in the favour of the APC candidate.

The state Agent of the PDP, Kissinger Ikeokwu, immediately left the collation centre.

However, PDP and LP had on Saturday night called for an outright cancelation of the poll.

The PDP candidate, Samuel Anyanwu, in a press conference, said that the election was rigged in the favour of Uzodimma.

Also, the deputy governorship candidate of the LP, Tony Nwulu, said that the security agents provided security for INEC staff and APC members to rig the poll.

He said that the position of his party was for INEC to cancel the election.

The fortunes of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State suffered a setback yesterday as one of its strong members, Dr. (Mrs) Kema Chikwe, announced her retirement from partisan politics and endorsed the re-election of the incumbent governor, Sen. Hope Uzodimma for another term.

Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to  Imo State governor, Oguwike Nwachuku in a statement said Dr. Chikwe’s position has not only left the PDP candidate for the November 11 governorship election, Sen Samuel Anyanwu and his campaign train at the crossroads, but has pierced the soul of a Party already suffering from self -inflicted crisis with a sharper knife.

Hi words: “However, the loss of the PDP has become the gain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as Dr. Chikwe is strongly throwing her weight behind other calls from well meaning Imo people and groups for the reelection of Governor Uzodimma for a second term in office based on the governor’s outstanding performance.

“At the 6th Anniversary of the Women Leadership Institute (WLI), a body formed by Dr. Chikwe to mentor women in politics and other ventures, in Abuja at the weekend, she proudly endorsed Governor Uzodimma for re-election and proceeded to announce that she had quit partisan politics.

She said Governor Uzodimma has lived up to public expectations in office with regard to his programmes and projects that are both people-oriented and life changing.

The Anniversary which had Governor Uzodimma himself in attendance, former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, former PDP National Vice Chairman (South East), Nze Fidelis Ozikwukwu Chukwu, among other key national political figures across party lines, was an opportunity Dr. Chikwe used to remind the audience of her foray into partisan politics.

“For example, in the course of Dr. Chikwe’s foray into partisan politics, she became a former Aviation Minister, former PDP National Women Leader and Board of Trustees member, former Ambassador of Nigeria to Ireland, former Chairman of Board of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) among others.”

Emeka Ihedioha, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, says his emergence as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Imo is an act of God.

Ihedioha told newsmen in Owerri on Tuesday that God was not done with him and the party yet. “I thank Almighty God for restoring the hope of the Imo people in electoral fairness and the rule of law. God is not done with us yet and he will complete his plans for us in the general elections in 2019,” he said.

He, however, commended his fellow aspirants for what he described as their high level of sportsmanship, and urged them to support him to win the election in 2019.

“I am highly emboldened by the level of cooperation we have had since the commencement of this process. I call on all aspirants on the platform of our dear party to join hands with me so as to ensure that we get the people’s mandate next year and actualise the divine agenda,” he said.

On his part, the Imo PDP Chairman, Mr Charles Ezekwem, expressed optimism that with the high level of discipline displayed by the aspirants, the PDP would emerge victorious in the 2019 polls.

“We still have a stiff contest ahead of us but I am encouraged by the level of discipline shown by our party men and women, the delegates and aspirants alike. I believe that if we continue this way, we will not be far from occupying the Government House in 2019.”

Ihedioha had polled 1,723 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Samuel Anyanwu, the Chairman Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges who polled 1,282 votes.
