The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has suspended Alakija Salami, a senior consultant at the hospital.

Salami was suspended over the controversy surrounding a COVID-19 patient who died on April 3, 2020.

The hospital authorities had been accused of covering up the circumstances that led to the death of the patient, a UK returnee.

But Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq, the governor, had attributed the controversy surrounding the case to lack of full disclosure, which he said was a breach of protocol.

At a media briefing, the governor had said his administration was expecting the outcome of the internal investigation of the incident by the UITH before taking further steps.

Two cases of the disease were later confirmed in the state. One is the wife of the late UK returnee while the second case is another UK returnee.

In a statement issued by the hospital on Monday night, David Odaibo, UITH director of administration, said the management approved Salami’s suspension “as a result of his conduct in the management of a COVID-19 patient”.

“The Management of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital hereby suspends Prof A.K. Salami as a Senior Consultant in the hospital. This is as a result of his unethical conduct in the admission, management and eventual release of the corpse of a suspected COVID-19 patient who died in the hospital on the 3rd of April, 2020,” he said in a statement.

There are reports that Salami facilitated the release of the corpse of the deceased to the family against the standard practice.

A Pharmacist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Lanre Alege, said that no fewer than 12 million people die of stroke and heart attack every year around the globe.

Alege made the disclosure on Sunday at a lecture after the monthly keep fit exercise by the staff of UITH at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin.

Quoting from the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics, Alege said that stroke was higher among men than women.

Stroke is a medical condition that occurs suddenly when part of the brain is damaged, either as a result of lack of blood supply (caused by blockages) or of rupture (bursting) of a blood vessel.

Alege, who was coordinates the keep fit exercise, said that stroke usually occurred without warning and had rendered many people totally or partially paralysed.

He listed some stroke risk factors as high blood pressure, cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus, ageing, smoking and obesity.

Other factors, according to Alege are race, gender, medical history and lack of exercise.

He explained that the warning signs included sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, blurring of or dim vision on one eye and sudden severe headache.

The pharmacist also said sudden nausea or vomiting and sudden speech difficulty or slurred speech were signs of stroke, advising people to quickly seek medical attention if any of these signs were noticed.

Alege advised people to exercise regularly and avoiding consumption of cigarette alcohol.

He also advised that any ailment should be properly treated and that cholesterol in the system was within normal limits.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UITH, Prof. Abdulwaheed Olatinwo, charged members of staff of the hospital to take exercise regularly.

The CMD was represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Yinka Buhari, who is also the Director of Clinical Affairs of the hospital.

He said that the institution would continue to encourage adequate participation in keep fit exercises.

A Consultant Neurologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Dr Kolawole Wahab, has said that 15 million people suffer from stroke worldwide annually.

Wahab who stated this on Thursday in Ilorin at a health talk organised by the Islamic Welfare Foundation (IWF) entitled, “Stroke and its Prevention” said that stroke occurs in man when the blood circulation to the brain fails.

“Five million out of the 15 million that suffer from stroke die, another five million live with it while the remaining five million get treated,” he said.

According to him, the two major causes of the disease are blockage of blood flow into the brain and blood bleeding into the brain.

Wahab, who said that hypertension accounts for between 65 and 85 percent of stroke cases in Nigeria, described this as the most common factor worldwide.

The expert described the brain as the most complex and delicate part of the human body with billions of cells controlling all other human parts.

He estimated that by 2030, 80 percent of the cases of stroke would be recorded in the low income and middle income nations of the world.

Wahab called for measures to reduce stroke and encourage its prevention among the people. “Alcoholic drinks increase the risk of both ischemic and haemorrhagic kinds of stroke and the ailment is common among the black race,” he said.

He advised that people should always engage themselves in daily body exercise, quit smoking and check their blood pressure regularly.

Other measures, he said, include taking drugs regularly if one was a hypertensive patient and keeping body weight in check.

“Avoid taking junk foods, always keep your blood pressure normal, reduce salt consumption, avoid deeply fried foods, eat vegetables and fruits always and take balanced diet,” he said.
