Defending La Liga champions Barcelona emerged 4-3 winners in an all-action encounter at Villarreal.

Robert Lewandowski’s goal sealed the win for Barca, three minutes after Ferran Torres’ equaliser.

Villarreal came back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 after 50 minutes, with goals from Juan Foyth, Alexander Sorloth and Alex Baena.

Barca had raced into an early lead after 15 minutes when Gavi and Frenkie de Jong scored for the visitors.

Gavi headed in from a Lamine Yamal cross before De Jong got on the end of a Lewandowski backheel in the box.

Yamal’s assist saw him become the youngest player to assist a goal in a La Liga game in the 21st century, aged 16 years and 45 days.

Foyth headed home from Baena’s corner before Sorloth equalised following an excellent team move by the Yellow Submarine.

Baena got on the scoresheet early in the second half, curling past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Villarreal were then pegged back as Torres scored Barcelona’s equaliser from close range, before Lewandowski’s finish from close range secured the three points for Barca from a dramatic contest.

Xavi’s side are now third with three games played, two points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Chelsea have signed Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson on an eight-year contract from Villarreal.

The 22-year-old scored 13 goals in 38 appearances for the La Liga side last season, including nine in the final eight league games.

He is the Blues’ second summer signing after the £52m deal for France striker Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig.

“He is a young player with big potential,” said co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley.

“We believe he is ready for this next step in his career and look forward to him working with our new head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, and his Chelsea team-mates.”

The two clubs did not disclose the fee involved but it has been widely reported that Chelsea will pay £32m for Jackson.

Pochettino is in the process of reshaping Chelsea’s squad, with a number of high-profile departures having been completed over the past week – and more set to follow.

Germany forward Kai Havertz has joined Arsenal in a £65m deal, while Manchester City have signed Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic for an initial £25m.

Jackson’s compatriots Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly have both joined Saudi clubs, while N’Golo Kante has agreed to sign for Saudi champions Al-Ittihad.

Winger Hakim Ziyech has also been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, and English midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek completed a move to AC Milan on Friday.

Bournemouth agreed a £20.3m deal for Jackson in January, at which point he had scored three goals in 24 games in all competitions, but the move fell through after his medical.

Jackson returned for Villarreal in March and went on to earn the La Liga player of the month award for May, helping his side finish fifth and qualify for the Europa League.

Earlier in the season he went to the World Cup with Senegal, making his debut against the Netherlands in the group stage.

Jackson added two further caps in June, claiming assists in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying draw against Benin and a 4-2 friendly win over Brazil in Lisbon, Portugal.

Gareth Bale was sent off in stoppage time after scoring two goals to rescue a point for Real Madrid against Villarreal in La Liga.

Bale, who seemed set to leave Madrid this summer, was shown both yellow cards in stoppage time after ending his 169-day league scoring drought.

Villarreal had taken an early lead through Gerard Moreno but Bale opened his account on the stroke of half-time.

Moi Gomez put the hosts back in front but Bale hit a late equaliser.

Villarreal started well and were rewarded when Moreno seized on the loose ball after Thibaut Courtois parried Karl Toko Ekambi’s low shot.

The visitors grew into the game and equalised on the stroke of half time when Bale scored his first league goal since manager Zinedine Zidane said “it would be best for everyone” if the forward left the club.

Madrid were dominant after the interval and Toni Kroos was denied by a brilliant double save by Andres Fernandez before Karim Benzema’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Gomez appeared to have scored a close-range winner against the run of play after Moreno’s shot was parried by Courtois, only for Javier Ontiveros to send the ball back across goal for the midfielder to tap in.

But Bale salvaged a point for his side when he cut in on his left to drive the ball past Fernandez before picking up his first booking for an indiscretion in the 92nd minute.

With the clock ticking down, Bale was shown his second yellow for a high boot two minutes after his first.

The Welshman becomes only the second Madrid player, after Cristiano Ronaldo, to score a La Liga double and be sent off in the same match this century.

The result sees Madrid climb to fifth in the La Liga table, while Villarreal move to 16th.
