The leadership of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has advised the speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal to resign his position after officially defecting to All Progressives Congress (APC).

After several months of flirting with APC and countless denials of plans to defect, Tambuwal defected to APC on Tuesday. It is rumoured that Tambuwal may emerge as the consensus governorship candiadte of his new party in Sokoto State.

After his defection, the National Working Committee of the PDP met with the leadership of the House of Representatives. The national publicity secretary of the party, Olisa Metuh, after the meeting said Tambuwal would have to resign since APC is in the minority in the House.

“After a thorough consideration of the matter, the NWC came to a conclusion that the Hon. Speaker, as a responsible elected officer, knows full well what is needful and honourable of him since his new party is in the minority,” a statement by the party’s publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, said.

“We are not unmindful of the fact that Hon. Tambuwal became Speaker on the platform of the PDP as the political party with the majority of seats in the House of Representatives and that this incontrovertible fact has not changed.”
