A Lagos based lawyer and human right activist, Femi Falana (SAN) has lashed out at parents and their children who protested the higher cut-off mark for admission in Lagos, saying it is not possible for them to set standard for University of Lagos.
Falana who was the guest speaker at the 13th edition of Crown Heights College, Ojoo, Ibadan valedictory service, said the institution cannot lower its standard because certain group are protesting their dissatisfaction.
While urging parents and applicants to consider legal implications of their actions, Falana noted that JAMB is the only agency saddled with the responsibility of setting cut-off standard for institutions in Nigeria going by the law that set up the agency.
He, however, urged the authority of the institution to reconcile with JAMB so as to ensure fair play in their dealings.
According to him, parents and applicants cannot decide cut-off mark for any university in Nigeria. “That is not the position of the law. We must learn to obey the law. We must embrace the rule of law.
“My advise to those parents and applicants who are protesting is to go to other institutions as JAMB advised or wait till some other time, if they can’t make it this year because they cannot allow any university to lower its standard because certain people are protesting.”
The legal practitioner also admonished parents to desist from taking their children to what he called ‘miracle centres’ for exams saying the students might not be able to defend it when they eventually get to higher institutions.
“Don’t take your children to miracle centre as some people do because it will backfire in future. Parents especially the mothers, I want to urge you to visit your children as often as possible because they are your future. If they do well, it is their father’s pride but if they brought shame to the family, it is for their mothers says an adage. I pray none of these children will bring shame to your family.
“As for the children, My first advise for you is never abuse your freedom when you get to higher institution. Don’t join any association without seeking the consent of your parents.
He advised “as you are going out here, you may think you are free when you get to university but you still have a long way to go. I want you parents to monitor them. And again, to you Students, don’t rely on your parents wealth but rather strive to become great professionals in life,” .
