Brazilian mining giant, Vale, on Tuesday announced that it will pay 400 million reais(160m dollars) to families of over 200 people killed when a mining dam ruptured in the south-east of the country.

At least 248 people were killed when the dam in Brumadinho burst on January 25, unleashing 12 million cubic metres of sludge on the surrounding area. Twenty-two people are still missing.

Parents, spouses and children of the victims will receive 700,000 reais, however, 200,000 reais will come from an insurance fund.

Siblings of the victims will receive 150,000 reais. Children of the victims will receive monthly payments to cover education costs until they are 25 years old.

The announcement came a week after a court ordered Vale to compensate for all the damage caused by the disaster.

It included damage to the environment and to the local economy.

The court blocked 11 billion reais of Vale’s funds for damage payments.
