The Senate, University of Ibadan, has called for sanctions of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU for disrupting the process of appointing the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the institution on Wednesday, October 28.

Some members of SSANU and NASU, UI chapter, last week Wednesday, disrupted a meeting of the Governing Council of the university chaired by Dr. Joshua Waklek in the wake of their protest.

The unions called for the suspension of the process aimed at ushering in a new Vice-Chancellor on the allegation that the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, supported his favourite for the exalted position.

Following the agitation, the university’s Governing Council suspended the process of selection of the VC.

Addressing journalists after the extraordinary meeting of the Senate held at the International Conference Centre, UI, on Wednesday, a former Dean, Faculty of Law, UI, Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose (SAN), said the normal university disciplinary procedures should be meted to the erring staff.

Bamgbose said, “The chairman of the Council, Dr Joshua Waklek, had been disrespected. Senate noted that the event was unfortunate and regrettable.

“The normal University disciplinary procedures should be instituted to deal with the erring staff forthwith.”
