The National President, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA),\u00a0Dr Osahon Enabulele, has said that doctors in public hospitals would end their five-day warning strike and resume duty on Monday.<\/p>\n
Enabulele, in a statement in Lagos, said that all doctors in the public health sector would resume full services with effect from 8.00 a.m. on Dec. 23.<\/p>\n
The NMA had on Dec.15 directed its members to embark on the nationwide strike.<\/p>\n
The action\u00a0is to protest against the doctors\u2019 poor working conditions, inadequate funding, and poor infrastructure in the nation\u2019s health sector.<\/p>\n
“NMA wishes to inform the general public that doctors in the public health sector will resume services from Dec. 23. This is in line with\u00a0our earlier promise to give prime consideration to the Yuletide season in the prosecution of\u00a0our warning strike.<\/p>\n
“Also, to give another opportunity for the Federal Government to concretely resolve all the demands of NMA for which it\u00a0first issued a 21-day ultimatum on Sept. 2,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Enabulele also called on the Federal Government to ensure that the demands of doctors were met.<\/p>\n
“Nigerian doctors shall not hesitate to commence a full blown strike from 8.00 a.m. on Jan. 6, 2014, if government does not satisfactorily resolve the demands of doctors.<\/p>\n
“We fervently call on all well-meaning Nigerians to assist in the resolution of the demands of the NMA.<\/p>\n
The demand includes\u00a0appropriate funding of Nigeria\u2019s healthcare system, expansion of universal health coverage to cover all Nigerians and health infrastructure upgrade.<\/p>\n
Activities in all the government-owned hospitals nationwide\u00a0were paralysed during the five-day\u00a0strike by medical doctors.<\/p>\n
The five-day strike paralysed activities in all health facilities in Lagos as consultants and resident doctors were unavailable to attend to hundreds of patients who thronged the hospitals. (<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
