The Electoral Commission of Ghana has finally declared Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party as the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana.

EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei announced that even with four constituency results outstanding, Nana Addo garnered enough votes to be declared winner of the polls, with 53.85% or 5,716,026 of the total valid votes 10,615,361.

“It’s my duty to declare Nana Akufo-Addo as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” Charlotte Osei, the commission’s chairwoman told media at its headquarters in Accra.

It is the first election defeat for a sitting president since Ghana returned to multi-party democracy in 1992, but it is the second time in the space of a week that a West African president has conceded to an opposition candidate, following the shock defeat of President Yahya Jammeh in The Gambia’s elections.

Electoral victory has come at the third attempt for Akufo-Addo, a 72-year-old lawyer, who has promised to industrialise the country and build factories in each of Ghana’s 216 districts.

Incumbent President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress had 4,713,277 votes or 44.40%, with Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party getting 105,682 votes or 1%.

Akufo-Addo has described President John Dramani Mahama as a statesman following a call from him to congratulate him for emerging winner in this year’s election.

In a Facebook post Nana Addo acknowledged Mahama’s call saying, “A few minutes ago, at 7:51pm, the President of the Republic and the NDC presidential candidate, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, called me on the phone to congratulate me on my victory in the presidential election of 7th December 2016.

“He wished me the best of luck and God’s blessings, and assured me of his full co-operation in organizing the transition from his administration to mine,” he said of the conversation between him and the president.

“I thanked him for this graceful gesture, which is in the finest traditions of Ghanaian statesmanship and, on my part, assured him of my cooperation for a successful transition. I also thanked him for his service to our nation and said that I felt sure that his contribution to the welfare of our Republic was by no means over,” the statement said.
