IFAD earmarks N75m to boost grains production in Jigawa

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) on Monday said it had earmarked N75 million under its climate change programme to assist farmers cultivate grains in some rural areas in Jigawa.

The State Programme Officer, Malam Umar Abubakar, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse that the project would cover 750 hectares of land.

Abubakar explained that 250 hectares of rice, 250 hectares of maize and 250 hectares of wheat, would be cultivated by rural farmers during the 2017 dry season.

He said that the programme was targeting vulnerable groups like youths and women in the rural areas.

According to him, 17 fadama locations in seven local government areas have been selected for the programme, adding that the exercise will later be expanded to 14 local government areas.

The Programme Officer said that water pumps, tube wells and fertilizer, would be procured and distributed to farmers under cluster arrangement.

Abubakar said that cluster arrangement had made farming easier and more effective in the state.
