10 students crushed to death in Katsina auto crash

No fewer than 10 students were on Wednesday killed and four others injured in a ghastly accident along Sheme-Kankara Road in  Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The accident occurred when a truck conveying the students to Government Day Secondary School in Kankara town collided with an oncoming truck.

The Malumfashi Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Tijjani Muhammad, confirmed the incident.

Muhammad said the accident occurred in the morning when the students were going to school, adding that the truck was also carrying timber.

According to him, the truck is coming from Sheme and going to Kankara while the other vehicle was from Kankara going to Sheme junction.

He said the rescued victims and the dead were taken to Kankara General Hospital.

An eyewitness, Umar Tanko, told that victims were residents of different villages studying at Kankara and boarded vehicles daily on the road.

Tanko said the students were sitting on top of the timber when the accident occurred, adding that logs of timber fell on them.

Also the Kankara General Hospital register indicated that the survivors and the dead had  been evacuated by their respective families.

The school had been closed to mourn the dead students.
