Olukayode Egbetokun, the acting inspector-general of police (IGP), has constituted a seven-man panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Sulaiman Jika.
Jika, who was a police cadet at the department of computer science, died on Friday at the police academy, Wudil, Kano state.
The police had earlier said the deceased, who hailed from Adamawa state, died after a “brief and unexpected illness”.
Jika’s colleagues however alleged that he died after being “continuously starved and malnourished for over two weeks” at the academy.
According to a statement signed by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, Egbetokun mandated the panel to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the cadet’s death.
Adejobi said the panel, headed by Abiodun Alabi, the deputy inspector-general of police in charge of the force criminal investigation department, will submit its findings and recommendations in four days.
Other members of the panel include Oyeyemi Oyediran, assistant inspector-general, training and development; Garba Nzukwen a force medical officer; Fom-Pam Joseph, CP Homicide FCID; Patrick Edung, CP training POLAC; Idris Abubakar, the principal staff officer II to the IG and a representative of the CP Legal.
