Ashiru, Kwara south senator, replaces Umahi as senate deputy leader

Lola Ashiru, senator representing Kwara south, has replaced David Umahi as deputy leader of the senate.

Umahi who represented Ebonyi south, held the position from June to August when he assumed office as minister of works.

Before the new role, Ashiru was the deputy chief whip.

Peter Nwebonyi, senator representing Ebonyi north, has been appointed deputy chief whip — Ashiru’s former position.

The changes in the majority leadership of the red chamber were announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Wednesday.

Opeyemi Bamidele and Ali Ndume still maintain their roles as senate majority leader and chief whip respectively.

On the minority side, no changes have been made in its leadership.

Simon Mwadkwon, senator representing Plateau north, is still minority leader and Oyewumi Olalere, remains his deputy.

Senators Darlington Nwokocha and Rufai Hanga are minority whip and deputy minority whip respectively.
