Nigerian music legend, King Sunny Ade (KSA) has finally broken his silence on the long-standing rumours about his relationship with the late iconic singer, Onyeka Onwenu (MON).
Sunny Ade who spoke when he paid a heartfelt condolence visit to the resident of the late Onwenu, Sunny Ade reflected on their collaboration and the rumours surrounding their bond.
Addressing the speculation about an affair, King Sunny revealed that it was all a strategic move to boost their music’s reach, particularly their hit song “Wait for Me.”
He said, “That was a gimmick we did. It was for the music. We wanted to launch ‘Wait for Me.’
“People used to think she was my girlfriend, but we never confirmed or denied it.”

Extolling her virtues, Sunny Ade described Onwenu as a remarkable woman who offered invaluable advice and support.
“She was someone who would sit down with you and say, ‘Can I chip in some advice?’ And her advice was always excellent,” he recalled.
Reminiscing on their collaboration, KSA noted that Onwenu often took the lead in their projects.
“When it came to music that involved both of us, she usually did more. She would just tell me, ‘Sunny, let’s take it this way,’ and it was always the right direction,” he said.
In order to establish a lasting legacy for the deceased, Sunny Ade has expressed his commitment to continue performing “Wait for Me,” and to always acknowledge her as the true owner of the song.
“I will, on her behalf, sing it throughout my life with any artist you want me to. I’ve done it several times in different countries, always mentioning her name as the owner of the song.”
Onyeka Onwenu, a celebrated music icone and actress, passed away on July 30, leaving a significant void in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
