Osimhen misses out as Lookman, Ekong make CAF player of the year shortlist

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the 2024 African player of the year awards will be held in December.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the 2024 African player of the year awards will be held in December.

In a post via X on Thursday, the continental football governing body revealed that the award event will be held in Marrakech, Morocco on December 16.

“It’s this time of the year again. 🤩“#CAFAwards2024. December 16. Marrakech, Morocco. Mark your calendars,” it wrote.

The venue and time for the event were not disclosed. This marks the third consecutive year that Morocco will host the prestigious ceremony.

Super Eagles players William Troost-Ekong, Ademola Lookman, and eight others are also jostling for the men’s player of the year award following their impressive seasons with their clubs and countries.

Stanley Nwabali was nominated for the goalkeeper of the year award while Nigeria will vie for the national team of the year category alongside Ivory Coast, Morocco, South Africa, and six others.

The annual event honours the best African footballer each year. The awards have been conferred by CAF since 1992.

The winner of the 2023 edition is Victor Osimhen. In the women’s category, Asisat Oshoala, another Nigerian football icon, holds the title after a stellar year on the pitch.
