The Rivers State House of Assembly has summoned nine commissioners and four heads of government parastatals for questioning over the state of the economy of Rivers, just as it suspended three Local Government Caretaker committee Chairmen in the state.
Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Leyii Kwane who presided over the Assembly ordered for their summon on Tuesday, May 12.
The deputy leader of the Assembly, Nname Ehwor raised the motion on the state of the Economy of Rivers State before the House and supported by the Assembly members.
The motion listed the nine commissioners as those of Finance, Agriculture, Power, Health, Tourism, Information and commissioner for budget. Others include Commissioners for Works, Transport, Accountant General of Rivers State, Chairman, Board of Internal Revenue , Chairman Rivers State Assembly Service Commission and the Chairman Secondary Schools Management Board.
In another development, the Rivers State House of Assembly also suspended three local Government Caretaker Committee chairmen including those of Khana local Government, Asari Toru local government and Ahoada East local Government for alleged insecurity and financial recklessness.
The state Assembly, in line with the motion on Insecurity and Financial Mismanagement by the Chairmen of Asari-Toru, Ahoada-East and Khana Local Governments presented by the Deputy leader of the House, Nname Ehwor suspended the three LG CTC chairmen and ordered them to hand over to the Head of Local Government of their councils.
Deputy Speaker of the Assembly who spoke with newsmen after the sitting said the Assembly’s action was part of their oversight function, hence everyone in the state is feeling the pains of the economy of the state. He said it is not meant to witch-hunt anyone in the state.
The Deputy Speaker said the invitation of some members of the Executive Council is not meant to witch-hunt any of them.
Kwanee said, “We are not doing this to witch-hunt anybody. We are all here as Rivers men. We are all here as stakeholder to see how best we can take this state forward.
“The Executives may have some challenges and that is exactly why we want to hear from them.”
