Popular Islamic gospel singer, Waheed Ariyo dies at 53

A popular Islamic gospel singer, Waheed Ariyo, died in the early hours of Friday at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan after a very brief illness.

Aged 53, the late Ariyo has since been buried according to Islamic rites at his residence at Ijoko, Ifo Local Government, Ogun State.

Our correspondent who visited the deceased singer’s home and office report that both the office and residence were crowded by sympathizers who came to commiserate with the family.

Our correspondent report that prominent Muslim leaders and Islamic singers including Sheikh Labeeb Adeboye, ellow Islamic gospel singers like Wasiu Sodiq, Barry Wande, Abdulkabiru Bukola Alayande and Qamarudeen Odunlami Aiyeloyun were present at the burial ceremony.

One of the late Ariyo’s close friends and Chief Imam, Fiwakesin Central Mosque, Opeilu, Agbado, Ogun State, Ustaz Halidu Arikeuyo Raheem, said that the late Islamic gospel singer was rushed from Ilorin to the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan where he gave up the ghost.

“He went to Ilorin for a house warming ceremony when he suddenly took ill. He was taken to an hospital for treatment but was referred to UCH where he died this morning (yesterday),” Raheem said.

The late Ariyo, an indigene of Iwo, Osun State who began his music career as a member of an Islamic group Naimullahi Muslic Redemption Club (NAMREDC) in the 80s will be remembered for his golden voice and deep knowledge of the Qur’an with some of his numerous hit albums since he went solo ibcluding Imo, Aditu Nla and Ojoola.
