The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has repealed the section of the state pension law which provides N100m medical allowance for former governors and N50m of the same allowance for former deputy governors.

Only 11 out of the 26 members of the assembly were at plenary on Thursday when the law was repealed.

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, had on May 28, assented to the pension law and the development resulted in public outcry from civil society, Nigeria Labour Congress, among others.

The medical allowance section of the Law had read, “Provision of free medical services for a former governor and his spouse at a sum not exceeding N100m per annum, and N50m per annum for a former deputy governor and spouse.”

The bill to repeal the section of the law was sent to the House by Akpabio on June 11, and was read at the plenary.

The house after receiving the bill allowed it to pass through first and second reading, and dissolved into a committee before considering the bill clause by clause.

After careful deliberation, the Deputy Speaker, Udo Kerien, moved a motion adopting the committee report and was seconded by Ekong Sampson.

After the motion, the bill was read a third time and was passed.

The Speaker, Samuel Ikon, who spoke after the passage of the bill, stated that the Assembly was moved by pressure from members of the public to amend the N100m medical allowance section of the law as sent by the governor.
