The All Progressives Congress, APC has raised the alarm over the alleged killing of a Major in the Nigerian Army and three others in Rivers State.
A terse statement by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Chris Finebone, said the soldiers were killed in Abonnema, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state on Thursday afternoon by unknown gunmen.
Finebone said the details of the killing remained sketchy at the time of the report, BUT promised that the Rivers State chapter of the APC will make the details public as soon as they are available to it.
The report is coming ahead of Saturday rerun polls in the state which has attracted unprecedented violence resulting in killings and maiming, including two persons that were beheaded.
However, contrary to the claim by the APC, the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt said the attack was carried out by suspected sea pirates.
According to a statement by Captain Eli Lazarus, Assistant Director Army Public Relations, 2nd Brigade Nigerian Army, Port-Harcourt, the troops on Patrol in Abonemma, Akilu torus LGA of Rivers State had a fierce encounter with a group of unknown gunmen suspected to be sea pirates.
“Our men displayed extraordinary gallantry during the encounter. Unfortunately, an officer and a soldier who sustained various degree of injury lost their lives.
“We are in pursuit of the criminals and we will surely get them. All law abiding citizens are urged to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
“The Army will continue to make necessary sacrifices to ensure sustainable peace and security of lives and property of everyone in the state.”
