The newly elected mayor of Temixco in Mexico, Gisela Mota, 33, was on Saturday shot dead by assassins, few hours after taking office.

She was a left-of-center former member of Congress, according to French news agency, AFP.

She was said to vowed to clean up the city ridden with organized crime and rampant drug trafficking, a reason she might have been killed.

The government of central Morelos state said that two of the suspected gunmen had been killed and one was in custody.
