Commercial banks in Ijebu Ode and Ijebu Igbo in Ogun State, which have been shut for over a month for fear of attacks from armed robbers, have reopened for business.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the state Commissioner of Police, Valentine Ntomchukwu, had ordered that a new Armoured Personnel Carrier, provided by Governor Ibikunle Amosun, be released to provide security cover for the banks in the affected areas.
He said with this development, business activities had picked up, compared to what it was some weeks back.
Adejobi said the police boss had earlier held a meeting with the Bankers’ Forum and Police Community Relations Committee leaders on the security challenges and prolonged closure of banks in the area.
The bankers only agreed to re-open their banks after the police commissioner had released a new APC and two Nissan Hilux vans to aid effective performance of the police.
He said, “The police commissioner, while appraising the security arrangement with his senior officers in his Eleweran office on Monday, reiterated his commitment to smooth operations of the banks and other commercial activities in Ijebu Ode and its environs and Ogun State in general.
“He said he will not accept or tolerate any security lapses from any police formation(s) or officers in Ijebu Ode and Ogun State at large.
“He however commended the bankers forum for its understanding and support given to the police on the issue, and reopening of banks in Ijebu Ode for normal economic activities to commence.
