The card reader of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has again rejected the thumbprint of former president Goodluck Jonathan, former president, in the ongoing Bayelsa state governorship election.
Alongside his wife and mother, Jonathan came to polling unit 039, Ward 13 in Ogbia local government area, located exactly opposite his Otuoke residence, but he could not get accredited via the card reader, just like it happened during the March 28 presidential election.
The incident happened at about 8:20am, thus forcing the president to retire to his house and returned to the polling unit around 10am, during which the card reader acknowledged his and his wife but failed to read his mother’s biometrics..
An incident form was filled on her behalf before she was manually accredited.
Speaking with journalists later, Jonathan said that the INEC must do everything possible to correct the anomalies associated with the card readers.
“Before we get to 2019, I think INEC should take a more critical look at the technology of the card reader to avoid unnecessarily disenfranchising eligible voters.”
