Security agencies have shut Nigeria’s National Assembly Complex, few hours to the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly.

Stern-looking policemen took over the complex very early this morning and barricaded the entrance with their vehicles, preventing sergeant-at-arms, journalists, and administrative staff from gaining access.

Sources said that the action may not be unconnected with tension already generated ahead of the inauguration over the contest for the leadership positions in the incoming assembly.

The ranks if the All Progressives Congress, APC Senators and House of Representatives members have been sharply divided following the decision of the party to present a consensus candidates for both chambers.

The party had at a mock election at the weekend, elected Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as it’s Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives respectively.

However, Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, both angling for the position have insisted on contesting for the positions, notwithstanding the party’s decision.

In fact, the two candidates have since been endorsed by the opposition Peoples a Democratic Party, PDP, the situation that has further heightened the crisis.

President Muhammadu who arrived Abuja from Germany in the early hours of today, has summoned a peace meeting with All Progressives Congress legislators by 9.00am at the International Conference Centre.

The inauguration is billed to commence by 10.00am but there are fears that it may be postponed to enable the ruling party, APC put its House in order.
