The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set up a fact finding committee to investigate the allegations of electoral malpractices levelled against the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers
The APC had alleged that there was no concrete election in Rivers, saying that that INEC ad hoc staff went to polling units without result sheets during the presidential and national assembly elections held on March 28.
APC’s allegation was corroborated by the views of some international election observers who believed that the conduct of elections in Rivers fell far below acceptable standards.
The PDP through its governorship candidate in Rivers, Nyesom Wike, however, debunked the allegations.
The Commission on Monday evening said it would study all the reports of the committee and thereafter make its decisions known.
“Further to the allegation made by @APCNigeria on the conduct of the Pres/NASS elections in Rivers & it’s call for cancellation. INEC has set up a fact finding mission to ascertain the veracity of the claims and allegations and to advice the Commission.
“The Committee comprises of Mrs. Thelma Iremiren, Col. MK Hammanga and Prof. Lai Olurode.
“They have departed for Rivers and it is expected they will submit their report before the end of collation of general results. Following the consideration of the report, the Commission will make its decision known.”
INEC did not say, however, if the results of the elections conducted in the state would be recognised or not.
