An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Monday granted bail of N500,000 each to five accused persons for alleged theft of heads of stockfish valued N11.5 million.

The accused persons, Emeka Chukwu, 41; Chidi Ekah, 41; Edwin Onyebuchi, 39; Ndubisi Obiora, 37; and Abuchi Nwani, 35, were arraigned on a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. I. Adelaja, ordered them to produce two responsible sureties each in like sum.

She, however, adjourned the case till Feb. 29 for mention.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that the offences were committed on Jan. 27, 2015 at Iddo Motor Park, Ebute Metta.

Ighodalo said that the accused persons connived and stole sacks containing stockfish head valued at N11.5 million property of one Ejim Okwudiri.

He said the offences contravened Sections 285(a) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 201, which on conviction stipulates seven and two years jail term, respectively.

They pleaded not guilty each to the charges.
