Dabiri-Erewa, others storm UI for state of Nigerian Diaspora discuss

Former chairperson, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, will on Monday be at the University of Ibadan to discuss the state of the Nigerian Diaspora.

A statement by Dr Senayon Olaoluwa, Coordinator of Diaspora and Transnational Studies, Institute of African Studies Unit, University of Ibadan, said the discourse was to look at the opportunities abound in the Nigerian Diaspora.

Entitled: “The State of the Nigerian Diaspora and Gender Relations in the 21st Century”, Olaoluwa said the lecture will hold at the Lady Bank Anthony Hall, University of Ibadan at noon on Monday.

He said the lawmaker will discuss the impacts of having Nigerian Diaspora and its effects on the socio-economy of the country.

Olaoluwa, who is the co-convener of the lecture alongside Dr Seunfunmi Olutayo of Gender studies Programme, said Dabiri-Erewa will equally touch on issues affecting gender in the 21st century.

“As a promoter of Diaspora Affairs and dogged fighter of gender discrimination, Hon. Dabiri –Erewa is just the round peg in the round hole for the discourse.”

He said the wife of the Oyo state Governor, Florence Ajimobi will chair the Joint Distinguished personality lecture with other guests both from the academic and Diaspora community in attendance.

He said Prof Dele Layiwola, the Director of the Institute will be the Chief Host while the Vice Chancellor, Prof Isaac Adewole is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour.

Olaoluwa said the views generated from the discourse would be collated and pass on to the policy makers for implementation geared towards making the Nigerian Diaspora a hub in Africa and improved gender relations in the country.

Dabiri-Erewa, a television broadcaster, was in the House of Representatives for 12 years and chaired the committee on Diaspora Affairs from 2007 to 2015.
