The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, on Monday began a week long orientation programme for its newly admitted students for the 2016/2017 academic session.
Chairman at the occasion and Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi Daramola, while addressing the students congratulated them for scaling through the admission exercise that brought them in, and urged them not to jeopardize the golden opportunity.
He encouraged them to be strong and mentally prepared for the academic task ahead which is a leap from their secondary school experience.
Speaking on the freedom that University environment offers, he said “coming into the university avail you an unusual measure of freedom that most of you are not probably used to. There will be no one to police you to do the right thing at the right time.
“It will be expected of you to display discipline, integrity, hard work, orderliness, good character and promptness which are exceptional attributes required of you to be successful both in character and in learning in the university”.
He advised them to treasure profitable positive relationships and work towards leaving good memories behind upon completing their studies. “Let it be said of you that you are responsible students. Now that you have become ambassadors of this great citadel of learning, you are to carry yourselves in such a way that will not tarnish the image of the university or bring it to disrepute.
“You are enjoined to be law abiding, responsible and dedicated to your studies so as to justify your parents and guardians investment.”
Daramola assured them of management’s readiness to look after their welfare through adequate and timely provision of social amenities, academic facilities and municipal services conducive for teaching and learning.
Corroborating the Vice Chancellor, Dean, Students’ Affairs Division, Professor Kayode Alese said “for you to actualize your purpose in the university, you must act wisely and smartly. There is no parent or guardian to monitor or guide you to be studious or be of good behavior.
“Therefore, you are enjoined to be law abiding, responsible and diligent to prove your worth as students and to have good behaviour. The university will ensure adequate provision of amenities to ensure you are comfortable with your studies.
“The Students Affairs Division is your home away from home. The division is there to assist you. We have professional counsellors who can guide you on how to solve your life challenges,” Prof. Alese said.
Various papers titled FUTA: From obscurity to prominence; University studentship, challenges and prospect, plans, purpose and pursuit of excellence were delivered by prominent resource persons.
The students were also taken through the rudiments of library usage, health care, ICT infrastructure and dangers of internet fraud, sports and recreational activities, campus security and the need to shun cultism among other topics.
Some of the students expressed their delight in gaining admission to the country’s best university of technology and promised to be good students by abiding by the law and regulations guiding their studentship.
