Eight students killed in Kano School of Hygiene explosion

Eight people have been confirmed dead while many others sustained varying degrees of injury in an afternoon explosion that rocked the School of Hygiene Kano. Most of the victims, our correspondent gathered, were students of the school.

The incident occurred around 2 .05 pm on Monday when most of the students were outside their lecture rooms preparing to enter for another lecture.

Most of the students were also at the school for their registration while other were receiving lecture while many others were offering the 2 pm prayer when the incident occurred

Malam Abulkarim personal assistant to PROVOST of the school, said he just left the mosque when he heard a loud voice from the premise in the school.

However a suspect has been arrested at the scene of the explosion and is currently helping the police in its investigation, the police spokesman, ASP Magaji Majiya has said.

A student of the School, Yahaya Suleiman told New Mail Nigeria that the bomb might have been planted inside the school premise early in the morning before the arrival of the students for the lecture.

Many of those injured have been taken to Murtala Mohammed Hospital and other nearby hospitals, while the corpses of the dead victims have been deposited at the hospital morgue.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Aderenle Shinaba further confirmed that eight people lost their lives in the explosion, while a person was arrested by the police.

The CP further disclosed that the number of victims that sustained varying degree of injury could not be ascertained, but added that the security operatives have cordoned the affected area.

The school authorities have since closed down the school and directed the students to leave the premises immediately.

As at the time of filling this report, the security operatives have blocked the road leading to the area, though the route is one of the major strategic streets in the state.
