Federal lawmakers from Ekiti State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have called for the removal of the State Mopol Commander, Gabriel Selenkere, who led the police assault on Governor Kayode Fayemi on Sunday.
The lawmakers, led by Sen. Babafemi Ojudu, representing the Ekiti Central Senatorial District, in the National Assembly, on Monday demanded his transfer out of the state in the interest of peace.
Police on Sunday disrupted a peaceful rally embarked upon by the APC members after sweeping the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, the venue of the Saturday’s official presentation of flag to the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Ayo Fayose.
Ojudu who described the attack on the governor as a collective attack on the people of the state said it was unwarranted.
“None of us was ready for violence. All that we were carrying were brooms which is the symbol of our party. What it indicates is that we are dealing with people who are not prepared for democracy, who are not ready for one man, one vote! who are not going to allow a peaceful, free and fair election.
“We are not cowards. If they allow free and fair election, we will accept the result. But if anybody tried to force his will on us, we are not going to sit down and fold our arms. We are no slaves, we are freeborn. We have seen worst regimes in this country and we have stood up against them. We are going to stand up against this too,” he said.
Stating that the attack was orchestrated to intimidate the ruling party and its supporters in the state, Ojudu said, “We know their plans. We know what they are planning against us. If they do not know now, they are going to meet a very resolute people in us.
“Please, tell them they should leave us alone. We are with our kinsmen-the Yorubas-in the South West. Any attempt to cow us or intimidate us will be resisted across the country, especially in the South West.”
According to Ojudu, it is only people that lack confidence and strategy that will resort to use of gun. “For a commander of Mopol to be insulting our governor in the presence of the Commissioner of Police shows the low level we have descended to in this country.
“What the commander did yesterday was a collective insult on our people. That should not happen again. Our people were ready to take laws into their hand but the government kept appealing to them that we will protest officially.”
Ojudu called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to transfer Selenkere out of the state in the interest of peace.
The Director General, Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organization, Bimbo Daramola recalled that Vice-President Namadi Sambo had a few months ago proclaimed that election in Ekiti and Osun will be war.
He said the Sunday attack which took place while Sambo was still in Ekiti was a confirmation that there had been a grand master plot against the governor.
He also revealed that PDP thugs on Saturday attacked women at APC secretariat in Ereguru and inflicted matchette cut on them after Fayose received the official flag of the party .
