In order to have a greater impact on the development of the Niger Delta region, Chief Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has recommended members of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, or NDDC, concentrate on regional initiatives.

During a courtesy visit by the NDDC Governing Board members, including its Chairman, Mrs. Lauretta Onochie, the Managing Director, Chief Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the two Executive Directors of Finance and Administration and Projects, as well as Directors of the Commission, Wike spoke at the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt.

Governor Wike challenged NDDC to successfully support the states of the Niger Delta region in implementing such large-scale projects since they would have a good influence on people’s lives in the area.

Wike offered his congratulations to the new Board members, but added, “I want to believe that you are honest in your declaration that you would do things differently going forward.”

He bemoaned the fact that the amount of money that had gone through the NDDC did not match the progress being made on the ground. “NDDC must refrain from providing contracts to politicians who are unable to carry out excellent projects,” he said.

The Governor emphasized the value of cooperation and bemoaned the NDDC’s practice of starting projects and programs without first seeking coordination with the state governments. Let us know when you wish to carry out projects in the state, he said. Project duplication must be avoided.

Wike urged Niger Deltans to fight those attempting to use them to work against the interests of the people and cautioned the Board members to avoid pressure from politicians who would want them to dance to their selfish rhythms.

The NDDC Chairman, Mrs. Onochie, stated earlier that the Commission was committed to working with the Niger Delta region’s governors.

She praised Governor Wike for carrying out numerous initiatives that had changed the city’s appearance, saying: “The growth that has occurred in Rivers State is fantastic. I applaud your administration and you for these worthwhile endeavors.

Onochie said that the new Board under her leadership would emulate the outstanding performance of the Rivers State Government.

She stated: “We are here to ask for your guidance because we are determined to change the trajectory of the NDDC.”
