A driver and three of his passengers yesterday sustained injuries after their vehicle plunged into the lagoon in Lagos.

The incident occurred around 12:29pm around Costain Roundabout inward Eko Bridge.

The vehicle, a Toyota Avalon car with registration number CAL-466GA, was said to have had a brake failure while moving on top speed.

The driver, it was gathered, lost control of the vehicle as he swerved off the busy road only to land inside a big canal nearby.

Other road users were said to have swiftly rushed to their rescue, evacuated them from the vehicle and took them to the hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said responders to the accident scene were told the occupants of the vehicle were receiving treatment at the hospital.

“At the time of the operation, the response team did not see the driver nor any occupant of the car. They were receiving treatment in a nearby private hospital.

“The agency’s heavy duty equipment, Hiab, was immediately deployed for recovery of the car off the canal. The recovered car was subsequently handed over to Nigeria Police, Iponri Division, for further investigation. The operation has been concluded,” he said.
