A bomb blast has hit Kasuwan Shanu, an abattoir, in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, leaving many dead and several others injured.
National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) officials, who visited the scene of the bomb blast claimed that more than 10 people were killed while hundreds suffered various level of injuries.
However, sources at the State Specialists hospital in Maiduguri, said, over thirty (30) were brought in dead while more of the injured were still been brought into the emergency ward, with some dying on arrival.
“We have received six corpses who died at the emergency ward since the injured were brought in and I just learnt that another victim of the blast has given up and they are bringing the corpse as we speak.” A hospital source told DAILY POST on phone.
Police and other security operatives have cordoned off the area before our reporter could get to the scene.
A police Inspector, Adamu A, told our correspondent not to go further because so many suicide bombers were said to have taken over the road to Maiduguri during the battle with troops on Monday night.
” All security agencies in Maiduguri are on red alert because these useless people according to signals we received have smuggled themselves into town with bad intention of suicide bombing.
”Yesterday, about five suicide bombers were arrested at Tashan Baga and this one is another bad day for everybody. Please, for your safety, I beg you to go back because anything can happen. These bad eggs want to see where people gather to go and detonate another explosive,” he said.
Speaking with some traders who were forced to abandon their sheds at the abattoirs, our correspondent gathered that, more than 70 people were hit by the explosion, but they can not be sure of the number of dead.
Amina Sarki, a meat seller at the abattoir said, ” Oga, we just heared the blow and everybody started running. We knew it was a bomb blast, we could not stay to count but those NEMA people who came immediately said 10 people were killed with many seriously injured.”
