Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has appealed to government to ensure stability in price of gas.
The appeal was made during the 36th Annual General Meeting of NALPGAM held at Golden Tulip in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
The National President of NALPGAM, Abideen Olatunbosun, noted the importance of prioritising gas availability for all Nigerians.
He expressed concerns that if the rising gas prices are not addressed, gas might become a commodity only affordable to the rich.
“It is very vital for me that the galloping hike in the price of gas in the recent time stands as a big challenge to LPG marketers. The government needs to find ways to ensure stability of gas price as well as make gas available to common Nigerians. If nothing is done to the increase in price, gas will soon be a commodity for the few rich in our society.”
In his keynote address, the Director of Petroleum Regulation Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Ogbugo Ukoha, urged the LPG to enhance gas utilisation through initiatives and infrastructure funding.
The guest speaker, Prof. Sunday Isehunwa of the Department of Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Technology, University of Ibadan, discussed the potential of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Nigeria’s energy transition to net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.
According to him, there is need for increased supply of LPG to meet rising demand and curtail sharp practices by some operators.
He said: “The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) has been the major supplier of LPG, but additional supplies are essential through functional refineries, adequate natural gas processing facilities, and removal of difficulties in importation when necessary. Infrastructure development will enhance access to LPG by rural communities.”
