Femi Gbajabiamila has resigned his membership of the 10th house of representatives.
Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house, read Gbajabiamila’s letter of resignation during plenary on Wednesday.
Gbajabiamila said his resignation is to enable him assume the role of chief of staff to President Bola Tinubu.
The president had appointed Gbajabiamila to the position on June 2.
He served as speaker of the house of representatives from 2019 to 2023.
Gbajabiamila spent 20 years in the lower chamber and was re-elected to represent Surulere 1 federal constituency in the 2023 general election.
Gbajabiamila was first elected to the house of representatives in 2003 and had won five straight elections before now.
He had served as minority whip, minority leader and majority leader before getting elected as speaker.
After reading the letter, Abbas declared the seat for Surulere 1 federal constituency vacant.
