Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says a fear of failure makes him “starving” for more success.

Guardiola led City to the Premier League title in a record-breaking 2017-18, during which they became the first top-flight team to secure 100 points.

They also registered a record number of wins and scored the most goals in a Premier League season.

“I don’t like the feeling to lose games. That simple fear to lose a games make you hungry,” said Guardiola.

City could win their first trophy of the new season when they meet FA Cup winners Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

Guardiola, 47, is aiming to become the first manager since Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson in 2009 to win back-to-back English top-flight titles.

“The players don’t have to be worried – I am ready to try it again,” said the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach.

“The fear to lose the games makes me starving and hungry again.

“All the managers try to avoid that feeling where you lose a game. You feel guilty, you feel bad, your private life is not good and your relationship with the players is not good.”

City winger Riyad Mahrez and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho are expected to make their debuts on Sunday.

Mahrez – a £60m signing from Leicester – is fit after an ankle injury. Jorginho, who chose Chelsea over City when he left Napoli, has impressed at the base of the Blues midfield in pre-season.

Sunday’s match will be Maurizio Sarri’s first competitive fixture as Chelsea boss.

Both sides have lifted the shield on four occasions, with Chelsea losing to Arsenal last season on penalties.

The last side to win the Community Shield and then go on to win the Premier League were Manchester United in 2010.

Both clubs have been quiet in the transfer market, with Mahrez and Jorginho their sole major signings.

Indeed, with plenty of World Cup stars only just back in training, the newer faces hoping to impress at Wembley may well be youngsters.

Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi has impressed so far in pre-season and may start in Eden Hazard’s place on the left of a front three, with Sarri ditching Antonio Conte’s back three for a 4-3-3 formation.

Belgium international Hazard has been given permission by Sarri to report back to the club on Monday, and the Italian says he has not spoken to the 27-year-old about his future.

Hazard has been deliberating over a new contract while also being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

“We didn’t talk about this,” Sarri said. “We talked only about ‘can I arrive on Monday instead of Sunday?’

“In this moment there is no problem for Hazard.”

Ross Barkley – largely forgotten by former manager Antonio Conte since his January move from Everton – could also start, but there will be no Hazard, Thibaut Courtois, Michy Batshuayi, N’Golo Kante or Olivier Giroud after their World Cup exploits. Brazil winger Willian failed to report for training last week.

City will be without World Cup semi-finalists including Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling but Pep Guardiola could hand a start to Phil Foden in midfield.
