A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, Chikordi Dike, narrowly escaped being killed in a failed assassination attempt, which claimed the life of a police escort, Corporal Yakubu, attached to him.
Sources said that armed men had allegedly attempted to kill Dike who is a one time Caretaker Committee Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
It was also gathered that the suspected assassins attacked their victims around Polo Club in GRA phase 2 and engaged the only policeman attached to Dike in a exchange of gunfire.
Yakubu was said to have been gunned down around 11pm, Tuesday night, after he was over powered by the suspected assassins while he was trying to protect his boss.
At press time the Rivers State Police Command is yet to give an official statement on the development.
