Gunmen invade MKO Abiola’s house in Lagos

Some gunmen invaded the residence of late Moshood Abiola, self-acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, in Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday.

Bala Elkana, spokesman of the Lagos police command, who confirmed the development said suspects have been arrested while investigation has commenced. “We have suspects in custody. We have commenced investigation,” he said.

The robbers were said to have gained illegal access to the building through scaling the fence.

The suspects were said to have carted away valuables including hard currencies but this cannot be independently verify it.

Abiola won the 1993 presidential election which was annulled by the military government of Ibrahim Babaginda.

In 2018, the president declared June 12 as Democracy Day in honour of Abiola, whom he gave a posthumous national honour.

Buhari had also approved the renaming of Abuja National Stadium to MKO Abiola Stadium in honour of the late businessman.
