Unknown gunmen have abducted the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Ahoada East Local Government Council in Rivers State, Cassidy Ikegbudu.
Ikegbudu was abducted in his community, Yiboko, by gunmen dressed in military fatigue uniform after a gun battle with security personnel attached to him in the early hours of Saturday.
Ahoada East is one of the four local government areas where house of assembly elections were rescheduled to hold on the 18th of April, after the election of April 11 was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The APC House of Assembly Candidate for Ahoada East constituency 1, Eric Apia, said armed men abducted Ikegbudu from his village, Yiboko.
“Reports received from his family said there was exchange of fire between security personnel attached to the chairman and the armed men.
The State Police Command, while confirming the incident, however has assured that action has been put in place to rescue him safely.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Muhammad, said in Port Harcourt that reports received from his family said there was exchange of fire between security personnel attached to the chairman and the armed men, adding that “The armed men later took the chairman away, dragged him to a nearby river and went away in a speed boat.”
