The Old Parade Ground, venue of the national convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) was on Friday, December 1, characterised by heavy shootings.
The shootings, which started on Thursday, continued on Friday at the venue of the convention, which is a few distance away from the Defense Headquarters, Abuja.
An official of the convention planning committee told our reporter that some students sustained wounds from the gunshots and machetes after thugs loyal to a candidate began attacking opposition delegates.
Videos seen by our reporter showed students scampering for safety during the heavy shooting on Friday.
He said the shootings were brought to an end by security agencies.
The source said some of the injured delegates were presently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Abuja.
According to him, the delegates for the convention, who have been in Abuja since Sunday, are presently meeting in an undisclosed location to determine the next line of action.
The source said they main reconvene on Saturday.
NANS, the umbrella body of students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, is expected to elect a new set of national leaders.
The students body had zoned the position of president of NANS to Zone B (South-south) with Pendro Obi Chibuzor, a PhD student from Delta State University and Lucky Omonefe as the leading candidates.
They are jostling to replace Usman Barambo who has served his term as NANS president.
