Former presidential aspirant and owner of AIC Limited, Harry Akande, has allegedly locked down the Diplomatic Car Park of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Akande was said to have invaded the airport on Wednesday in a convoy of cars with several men to personally take possession of the land which has for some time now come under serious dispute between his company and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
Akande who reportedly arrived at about midday, used his personal car to block the entrance to the car park, which led to a traffic gridlock at the entrance of the Arrival Hall of the airport for a long period.
It took the intervention of security officials to bring the ugly situation under control but sources within the vicinity told our correspondent that the thugs allegedly brought by Akande are still loitering inside the park as at the time of this report.
FAAN in a statement said the thugs constitute a security risk at the airport as they reportedly parked a bus loaded with barbed wire within the premises of the disputed land.
An SMS had on April 7 been sent to some journalists inviting them to cover the takeover of the disputed land.
“Our Chairman, Chief (Dr) Harry Akande intends to physically reclaim our land on Wednesday, 9th April @ 9am. We will appreciate your presence to record the event…” the SMS had stated.
FAAN said in the statement that Akande’s latest action was not the first time he, along with “his men have tried to take the laws into their own hands over the disputed land, using unsubstantiated court orders as excuse.”
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, as a responsible entity will continue to protect the interest of the Nigerian people within the ambits of the law, no matter the level of provocation,” FAAN said.
