In line with its mission to create, preserve and transfer wealth across generations, Heritage Bank has organised a financial literacy programme for children and youths in Lagos.
The programme is flowing from a mandate by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for all banks, to educate children and youths on money and its values.
Heritage Bank took the lead in the industry by launching the Financial Literacy Programme for schools in February 2014, where it unveiled its brand ambassador, Zuriel Oduwole.
According to Amarachi Iheagwan, Heritage Bank’s Customer Engagement Analyst, who was the lead facilitator at the event in Lagos, which was part of Awesome Treasure Foundation’s Summer Camp, the goal of the Financial Literacy programme is to empower Nigerian Children and Youths to make informed decisions about finances and wealth creation so that they can improve on their present and long-term financial wellbeing.
“The programme is aimed at educating children and youths on managing money effectively.“
According to her, the Heritage Bank’s Financial Literacy Programme is a platform for learning and inspiration to help children and young adults establish a positive relationship with money and navigate personal finances as their financial needs mature.
“Financial Literacy programme is a key enabler to the achievement of financial inclusion for sustained economic growth and development in the country,” she noted.
Some of the topics discussed at the lecture include money, the banking system and the Nigerian currency.
On money, Iheagwan emphasised three things which she said are the most important about money.
She identified those things as saving, spending and sharing and enjoined the participants to strive to save money before spending on their needs and thereafter share what is left.
She also educated the children on the banking system and the role of the bank in fulfilling the essence of their dreams and described the bank as the custodian of their wealth and driver of destinies of youths who are financially knowledgeable.
According to her, the children and youths should have the knowledge about the value and essence of money early in life, as this will put them ahead of their peers in the area of creation and preservation of wealth.
She reiterated the campaign by the apex bank on the proper handling of the naira, adding that the currency should be handled with care, while enjoining them to emulate the characters of the Nigerian heroes whose pictures appear on the various naira notes.
So far, the bank has implemented financial training sessions in 8 schools across Lagos, Abuja, Abia and Ekiti States.
