A member-elect representing Rano constituency, in Kano State House of Assembly, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Assembly.

Rurum’s emergence, according to keen political watchers in the state, signals a defeat for the immediate past governor of the state Engineer Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who reportedly supported Abdullahi Yusuf Falgore from Rogo constituency for the position.

The new Speaker, Rurum, is the candidate of Kwankwaso’s former deputy and current chief executive of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Our correspondent reports that Rurum defeated seven others to emerge Speaker in an election that took place at midnight in the Kano legislative quarters.

It was reliably gathered that the election which was earlier scheduled for Monday was rescheduled to early hours of Sunday.

The emergence of Rurum, a second timer, has put to rest the intrigues among the 40 lawmakers who are all of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The deputy speaker of the 7th Assembly, Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari from Makoda constituency maintained his position while Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, member representing Fagge constituency was elected as the House leader.

The speaker position was zoned to Kano South Senatorial district, because Kano North Senatorial district has produced Governor Ganduje while the Deputy Governor Professor Hafizu Abubakar, is from Kano Central senatorial district.

When contacted on the development, the Director of Press of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kabiru Salisu Koki, said the lawmakers decided to elect principal officers of the House before formal inauguration today to avoid crisis.
