President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to commission the Nigeria Maritime University on May 10 in Delta, according to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
NIMASA’s Spokesman, Isichei Osamgbi, said in a statement on Wednesday that the president would also perform the ground-breaking ceremonies of the university’s permanent site and NIMASA Dockyard and Shipyard both at Okerenkoko.
It said that the dockyard when completed would build and maintain various sizes of vessels.
The statement quoted NIMASA’s Director General, Patrick Akpobolokemi, as saying that the university was expected to commence academic activities at the temporary site in Kurutie in September.
“The university will provide the human capacity required for the maritime sector in addition to serving as a research and knowledge centre,” it said.
According to the statement, the establishment of the university is in furtherance of NIMASA’s passion for human capacity development for export.
It said that about 2,505 officers and ratings were undergoing various maritime programmes in reputable institutions in Philippines, Egypt, India, Romania and the United Kingdom.
Akpobolokemi said the NIMASA’s capacity development initiatives would quicken the pace of human capacity development for the cabotage scheme in the very near future
