The Kano State House of Assembly has elected a new speaker following the resignation of the former, Gambo Sallau.
The new speaker is Ishaku Danja, who was until Tuesday’s election, the Deputy Speaker, while the former Majority Leader, Hamisu Chidari, becomes the Deputy Speaker.
The House had also elected Kabir Alhassan as the new Majority Leader to replace Chidari.
The former speaker announced his resignation in a broadcast in Kano on Tuesday, stating political reasons as the basis for his action. “I, Gambo Sallau, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, hereby announce my resignation as the speaker.’’
Sallau and three other members had on Monday announced their decision in a local radio station to remain in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The decision came barely 24 hours after 26 of the 31 legislators defected to the APC from the PDP.
