Following the supreme court’s judgement that affirmed him as the governor of Kogi State, Governor Yahaya Bello has said that his victory following the judgement is a “big honour to democracy.”
The Governor who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Kingsley Fanwo shortly after the Supreme Court’s ruling said the judgement has reconfirmed the hand of God in Kogi’s affairs.
“The landmark judgement of the Supreme Court today, which affirmed Governor Yahaya Bello’s election is a watershed in the annals of electoral jurisprudence and constitutional law in the country. It was a long walk to victory which will reshape the constitution of the nation.
“Governor Yahaya Bello had remained humble and magnanimous in victory. He has called on those who contended with him to join him in building a greater Kogi State.
“The Governor has said the victory belongs to all Kogi people who believed in transforming Kogi State from a potentially great State to a really great State. He is committed to serving the people and making the State the centre of excellence and the cynosure of all eyes,” he said.
He warned supporters against “unbridled” celebration, saying the moment entails a challenge to all Kogites to reflect on how to make the State great.
The Governor said he will continue to pursue his cardinal goals of improving education, reinventing healthcare, boosting infrastructural development as well as raising the capacity of the State citizens to reinvigorate the economy.
He thanked the Judiciary for rising to the occasion by standing firm with what is true and just.
Meanwhile, the Association of Local Governments of Nigerian, ALGON, Kogi state chapter has commended the Justices at the Supreme Court on its judgement reaffirming the incumbent Governor, Yahaya Bello, describing it as confirmation of God’s wish for the state.
Chairman of ALGON, Taofiq Isah, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Abubakar Hussain, described the judgement as a welcome development and victory for the rule of law.
Taofiq congratulated the governor, emphasising that the apex court has put to rest those laying claims to the coveted seat of governor.
“The Supreme Court judgement had confirmed who is the authentic governor of Kogi state. Governor Bello has been confirmed and reaffirmed as the substantive governor of Kogi state. Anybody still laying claim is doing that at his own peril”,he said.
He therefore commended the justices of the Supreme Court, saying they have displayed courage and fearlessness in handling the judgement.
“The Justices have finally reaffirmed the judgements at the Tribunal and appeal Courts. We are calling on all stakeholders in the APC to come together and join hands with the administration of Governor Yahaya Bello in the interest of the growth and development of Kogi state”, he implored.
Also reacting, the immediate past governor of the state, Captain Idris Wada said he was yet to study the judgment. The former governor who stated this through his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Jacob Edi said he could not react then until he sees the copy of the Supreme Court judgment.
