The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says the number of system collapses has reduced significantly in the country.
In a statement on Wednesday, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s spokesperson, said grid disturbances declined by 76.47 percent in five years.
She said the country recorded 20 system collapses from 2020 till date, compared to the 85 grid disturbances between 2015 and 2019.
“Clearly, between 2020 and date (five years), we recorded fourteen total and six partial grid disturbances totalling twenty (20), which represents a 76.47% reduction in grid disturbance, when compared to the previous five years, (2015 to 2019), where we had sixty-four total and twenty-one partial grid disturbances, totalling eighty-five (85) times,” the TCN spokesperson said.
“This improvement is, however, not unconnected to the continuous effort by the management under Engr. Sule Abdulaziz to strategically expand the grid while harnessing in-house capacities to find solutions to grid stability, pending the deployment of SCADA/EMS.”
The commission said there is room for improvement and promised to keep up its work to further reduce the number of grid disturbances to the barest minimum.
The national electricity grid had, on February 4, collapsed for the first time in 2024. The country also suffered another nationwide blackout on March 28 following a grid collapse.
On April 15, the electricity grid experienced another system collapse for the third time in the year.
