The Nigerian Army has declared an unknown number of soldiers missing and nineteen injured after the troops were ambushed by Boko Haram fighters on Thursday in Nguro Gongon, Borno State.
Army spokesperson Col Sani Usman added that a rescue team has been deployed to the area while the injured soldiers have been taken to the state capital, Maiduguri.
The statement said the soldiers were ambushed after carrying out a successful operation against some militants camps.
The “soldiers basking on the recorded success, returning to their defensive locations, ran into an ambush by a group of Boko Haram terrorists who came to reinforce their fleeing comrades. The troops fought back gallantly killing several of the insurgents,” said Usman.
The Army spokesman said the Nigerian Army was working hard to ensure every person involved in the operation accounted for.
